final的用法

1.用作形容詞，有兩個主要意思：

(1)用作本義，指“最后的”、“最末的”，主要用于名詞前作定語。如：

Z is the final letter in the alphabet. Z是字母表中最后一個字母。

The final thing he did before he left the house wasto lock the door. 他離開房子所做的最后一件事是鎖門。

(2)用作引申義，指“確定的”、“不能變的”，可用表語或定語。如：

Iwon’t go, and that’s final. 我不去，就這么定了。

2.用作名詞，表示“決賽”或“期末考試”，通常用復數(shù)形式。如：

Atthe finals, they lost to Japan. 決賽時他們輸給了日本隊。

Whendo you take your finals (=final examinations)? 你們的期末考試什么時候進行?

3. 關于 final 與 last：

(1)兩者都可指順序上的“最后”，有時可換用。如：

The final [last]word in this dictionary is" Zoom". 這本詞典的最后一個單詞是"Zoom"。

(2) last 主要指一個系列 (如順序、次序、時間等)的最后，含有再往后就沒有了的意思。如：

He is sitting in the last row. 他坐在最后一排。

He was the last to arrive. 他是最后一個來的。

有時指“剩下的”。如：

He had spent his last shilling. 他把最后的一點錢也花光了。

(3) final 不僅指順序上的最后，而且含有以此作為結束或到達終點之意。如：

He failed in the final examinations. 他期終考試沒有及格。

The final item of the English evening was wonderful. 英語晚會的押臺節(jié)目很精彩。

final可由“最后的”引申出“確定的”或“不能改變的”。如：

Thedecision is final. 這個決定不能改變。
